ARMY Daughter calls it my “old lady” hobby. But truth is, I have been cross stitching since I was in college, but I hadn’t completed any projects in YEARS. Here on ARA, other members have shared their stitched projects and I was inspired to pick it up again.

This post will walk you through basics on how to get started with cross stitch.

Before you say “I can’t sew” just remember all you need to be able to do is make an “X”. And even better, the cross stitch fabric is made up of little squares - like graph paper - so nothing is freehand. Easy, right?

If you are new to this (or rusty like I was) you’ll want to start with a simple pattern: not too much detail or colors, and maybe something on the small side. I started with this Koya project. When finished it was about 4” x 4”. And even though it looks basic, it still has about 10 different thread colors. It doesn’t look like it, does it? There is subtle shading here and there.

Find an image and upload to Pic2Pat. It is free and very easy to navigate. You will need to select the size of the stitches - I suggest starting with ”14-count” which I’ll explain further below. The program will then show you what the pattern will look like and give you options for how many colors you want to use. I typically go with less than 30 colors. Save, print the pattern, or save and use off your phone or tablet. Using it from a devise is helpful as you can enlarge the pattern for those of us with “older” eyes.

I used this style of BT21 images to make my patterns.

The pattern will look like this, with various shapes representing the colors used. There will be a key to match the shapes with colors. Think of it as the stitching equivalent of “paint by numbers.”

So far the process is free. The rest of the supplies are relatively inexpensive. If your local craft store issues coupons, use them!

• Aida 14-count cross stitch fabric

Fabric can be purchased from any craft store. I use 14-count, which simply means there will be 14 X’s per inch of fabric. The pattern will show grids by inch so you can estimate the finished size of the design. You’ll want your fabric to be about 2” wider than the pattern on on all sides. I bought this package of Aida cloth that measures 15” X 18” for $3.99; with a coupon, it came to about $2, and is enough for two of the patterns I’m working on.

Nothing special, but not necessarily a regular sewing needle. Embroidery needles are usually more blunt tipped. Use what you are comfortable with.

Refer to your pattern for colors needed. Depending on where you buy, each skein of floss will cost about $.50. If you buy ten colors, for example = about $5.00. Most craft stores carry DMC floss, as well as Wal-Mart.

The floss is comprised of six strands of thread. You’ll want to separate the strands and use only three at a time when working on 14-count fabric.

• Pattern that you have already created

• Scissors that you probably already have

• Optional: Embroidery hoop

Some instructions advise to start in the center of the pattern, since it’s easiest to find the center of the fabric to start. I usually start with the largest sections of single colors and then the smaller details last. Some stitchers will work 1” block by 1” block to avoid having to count stitches as much. Try what works best for you.

Keep working. This is not a quickly completed project. I like stitching and keeping my hands busy while watching my k-dramas. Just pay attention to the pattern and make sure your X’s are all going the same way.

I’ve got Mang and Tata finished and have started RJ. I plan on completing all eight characters and perhaps constructing a couple of pillows or putting them in frames. Who knows? Anyway, I’m really enjoying my new, old hobby.
